Comment Help Please

This is a post asking for your help out there in blogging world!

I am having a big problem that I really need resolved. I am a new blogger and I really want to make connections out there, but I am losing a lot of opportunities because of this issue. Here is what is going on, maybe you can help.

When I am visiting another person’s blog, I see this at the bottom of their post along with a number of comments made by others…

comments

Pretty typical, right?! But when I write a comment and then click the “Post Comment” button, it either appears right away, appears and says “waiting approval”, or completely disappears. Of course, the result varies depending on what blog I am on. What I am concerned about, obviously, is when they just disappear.

Some other bloggers have told me they have found my comments in their spam. Some said they never got anything from me. I have been trying to figure this out for weeks and am getting nowhere. I tried contacting WordPress, but there is a message that says they are working on improvements or something for the next 2 weeks, so it sounds like there is no support for 2 weeks.

If anyone has had anything similar like this happen to them or has any ideas or suggestions for me, please let me know. It would be so appreciated!

It is probably due to the Blog’s Moderator settings. I moderate everything, so you presumably get a Waiting Moderation notice after Posting. If you Comment on a Blog that has not configured Moderation to be on, then Posting your comment will make it disappear, but it should immediately show up if you then go back into that Post’s Comments area.

Just watched what happened with my earlier Comment and it disappeared, but then showed up as your first Comment against this Post. I would surmise that your Moderator settings are Off.

I went into my Discussion Settings. Is that what you mean? I see there is a setting that I have marked (it must have been marked automatically) and it says for Akismet anti-spam strictness you can choose “Strict: silently discard the worst and most pervasive spam” OR “Safe: always put spam in the spam folder for review.” Mine is on “Strict.” I’m not sure what to have that setting on for my blog?
But that shouldn’t matter for when I comment on other blogs, should it? And I wonder why I show up as spam anyway?

I would suggest Safe for your Sam filter because it does make mistakes. I see all supposed Spam, and have caught a few errors although, in general, Akismet is very good. Akismet simply attempts to take out the “garbage factor” from your incoming Comments and has nothing to do with your commenting on other Blogs.

I prefer my Moderator setting to be On because, while most Comments are legitimate, I have caught a few that are simply trying to manipulate my blog to their own purpose. I have also Trashed one that was offensive.

My bedtime now but can discuss further tomorrow if you wish.

        Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

OK, so yes you can reply tomorrow. I will switch that setting, but I still wonder why my comments on other people’s blogs are not showing up or are being marked as spam. Maybe it is their settings, but I just don’t get why what I am writing in comments would seem like spam.
By the way, thanks for taking the time to try to help!

I have to question why your Comments are going into Spam (they don’t with me). It could be their Spam filter is too sensitive; something about the data “behind” your Comment which matches a common Spam pattern; your email info may be similar to Spam patterns. It could also simply be the Blog owners excuse for not acknowledging your Comment!!! As the users can easily flag your message “Not Spam”, I would question any Blog site that regularly gives you that rationale. 🙂

Hmmm…I hope I get this figured out. I certainly hope it isn’t the bloggers themselves not wanting to acknowledge my comments. That doesn’t seem like good blogging etiquette. And if it’s their settings, then I don’t know how they get any comments to go through. I never say things offensive or inappropriate.
I see what you are saying about commenting and then it kind of disappears for a minute and then appears at the top of the comments. That has happened to me before. But there is a bunch that simply disappear. I don’t know where they are going. It seems like it happens way too often on different blogs. So frustrating.

I hope that bloggers appreciate comments from their readers. I know I do, and make every effort to encourage and acknowledge. I suspect not every blogger realizes how much assistance they can get configuring their blogs properly by scrolling down their Dashboard. I have found that sometimes I can’t get my comment to be accepted the first time. And you don’t want to backspace, because it could be lost for sure. I copy it elsewhere then back space, which allows me to go for posting it until it takes. In my opinion, there’s something wonky in the way certain blogs are managed. It’s not personal I don’t think. If I can’t get my comment to take a second, or even a third time…I simply move on to a blog that will take my comments right off the bat. Comments are precious, and I hope fellow bloggers appreciate them enough to make sure they are accepted the first time.

Thank you for your thoughts. Maybe you’re right, maybe some bloggers don’t know how to configure everything. And that’s a good tip to try two or even three times to get a comment to stick. And it obviously happens to you sometimes, so at least I know it’s not just me. Thanks! 🙂

You are very welcome. We bloggers are connected by a common thread. Finding it doesn’t have to be rocket science if we do our research. WordPress makes it fairly easy with a bit of mutual comradery. Highest and Best!

Yes, this has happened to me. I commented on someone’s blog and the comment just disappeared. I checked out the actual site, and the comment was just waiting in moderation. Comments can accidentally end up in the spam folder sometimes, which is why it’s important for bloggers to check their spam comments regularly. Glad to have someone that feels the same way about this!
