I didn’t plan a post tonight, but I came across this article and I was thinking…really? It’s that surprising?
The article is about a security camera catching a man going over to a stray dog out in the cold and giving him some food & taking off his own jacket to lay over the dog. Wonderful! This is a truly compassionate man.
This is the heading to the article:
Security camera catches man doing something for freezing stray dog. It’s unthinkable for most people..
It’s unthinkable to most people? Is it really?
I am taken back and saddened that most people would see an animal in need and just keep going. What does this say about us?
Once again I would like to look at the definition of empathy:
the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner; also : the capacity for this
(taken from the Merriam Webster dictionary)
When I was looking up “empathy” online it is referred to as a skill. Well, I think a lot of people are missing this very important life skill.
Humans and animals, both living beings. We need to look out for each other.

Much as I totally share you reaction to this scene, it really is not a surprise to me that most people would just carry on there way… after all… that’s exactly what most people do with people living on the street.

That is true! I may even be guilty of that and I think the biggest reason is because I think to myself that people are responsible for themselves and their situations, but animals are completely innocent. But I know that is not always true either. Some people are brought up in terrible circumstances and just don’t have “life” skills.

We often do not know a shelter dog’s history, and treat it accordingly. We really do need to give people the same consideration.

To be on a lookout for a needy animal is such a small thing and helping out such a small gesture that we magnanimous humans don’t even think about it. We are busy with planning big things… economy of the country, neighbors cars, neighbors daughter’s boyfriend… gossip etc.
A shame on us being called humans.

Thank you for your comment. I agree. We humans can have our priorities screwed up and be very, very selfish.

At the risk of sounding ridiculous, I think empathy is a superpower, not everyone has the ability to understand and relate to another being’s feelings or experience, even some sympathetic and compassionate people lack it, but the world needs more empathy. Just my two cents. ☺️
