Sunday Pause (Paws): Rest Your Mind

It’s Sunday! Time to kick back, relax, and take a deep breath in & out and turn off the mind.

A picture says a thousand words and isn’t this one absolutely true?! The dog pictured above is seeing what’s right in front of him and nothing else. The human, well, I can’t even name all of the things he is seeing (thinking about).

I am guilty of a racing mind. I have a really hard time relaxing. Sure, I can sit on the couch and watch a tv show, look through Facebook, visit with a friend, or write a poem. But to clear everything out of my head and just be…now that’s a challenge.

It takes work to stop everything going on in your mind and just look at what is in front of you. It is not easy! I challenge you to try it right now. Turn away from reading this for a couple of minutes and look out your window and just SEE. Don’ think about anything else. Then come back and continue reading.

I‘ll put this picture in here to break up the post.

OK, you’re back. How did it go? Let me know. Be honest, did your mind wander anywhere else through those few minutes?

It isn’t easy. But if you work at it, you just never know how much more relaxed you can get.

We can all learn lessons about this from our pets.

Happy Sunday! Enjoy your day and try to rest your mind.

Yes, it can be difficult – at best – to totally relax the mind, to slow it down. I’ve become fairly good at it these last couple of years; but I’ve by no means mastered it. Sometimes I really have to go off by myself (or with the dogs in the back yard) and just force myself to listen to nature, take a few deep breaths, tune out everything else, and just enjoy the peace around me. Other times it just takes a few minutes of closing my eyes and ears. Namasté.

It helps having the freedom to do it when the need arises. I’ve been working on it a lot more since I retired. It’s “kinda” hard to “zone out” at work when you’re on the phone all day because management insists on instant response to those phone calls. 😤 I used to look at our home phone and yell “Shut up damn you!” every time it rang. Now I leave the ringer on mute and let Nomorobo pick up the junk calls and the answering machine take the others. Works wonders for my psyche!
