It’s Not Enough

You know it really gets to me when someone says all a pet needs is some food & water and they’re fine. Although it is true that they will most likely will be fine physically what people forget to think about is how they feel. To know how they feel all we have to do is listen.

That’s really the whole point of animal advocacy, animal empathy, and love for animals. It’s putting yourself in their shoes and paying attention to what they are trying to communicate. I think if everyone took the time to do that we would see that just throwing some food & water at them is not enough.

Animals are living, breathing beings just as we are. They, as we do, have a life and that life is with us because we made the choice to bring them into our family. There is a saying that they are a small part of our life but to them we are their whole world. Well that’s just it and sometimes that feels like a lot of pressure doesn’t it? I am certainly not perfect and feel guilty all the time for not spending enough time playing with Cino.

Us humans are always tired, aren’t we? But I do more than just throw food & water at her. She is family and I consider her needs everyday. People who know me know that If I could bring her with me everywhere, I would and if I have an option to go somewhere further away, I won’t unless I can bring her.

Although I can’t control how someone spends time with their pet, I hope I can help others see that they are feeling beings too. Not an object, not “just” an animal, but a living, feeling being with their own needs.

I agree whole heartedly! It takes a lot of caring and compassion to see that all Gods creatures are living beings. Not just pets. It infuriates me to see how neglected people’s animals are. And I have to swallow hard, to keep from just losing it! But , even though there’s a lot of animals I can’t do anything about, I can take comfort in knowing that God had them covered, and that I have a lot of power to help those who come my way.
I weep for them and pray for them and got to the extreme to help them, and I have Bern their voice when they were being harmed. And even though it never seems enough, I can wake up and ask God, “How do you want me to help them today?” and know He’ll supply the means and way to do what’s needed.
And that, for me, has to be enough.
God Bless the Caregivers and Advocates!

Your comment is very heartfelt and touching Drea! Those of us who advocate and help animals certainly experience many emotions….anger, confusion, helplessness, stress, anxiety, sadness but also joy and satisfaction in knowing we are making a difference and that we are doing just want God wants us to. YOU rock too! ❤️

I believe this so much. My father unfortunately believes that food and water is all you need to give animals but luckily he doesn’t stop me from “spoiling” mine. It’s so sad that so many people see it this way, animals have beautiful souls and their mental health is just as important as their physical health. Also a lot of people don’t look into what they even feed their animals which then shortens their animals lifespan. My cockatiel I rescued suffered both mentally and physically in his old homes, he was never interacted with because he wasn’t friendly (just because he’s not friendly doesn’t mean you can’t interact with him, I did and he eventually became friendly) and they never tried getting him on a healthier diet so that eventually caused his death.
