I wrote the following poem this morning because there was a shooting near me last night. As some of you know writing poetry helps me release feelings. It is so hard to hear about all of these shootings and think about the current state of this country and our world. It seems we can’t go a week without hearing of a shooting and most of the shootings are by students. A change is needed and it’s not always just the law that needs to change.

It seems to be our new reality
A shooting here, a shooting there
The only way to change this
Is with love and prayer

Laws will always be broken
Causing many people despair
The only way to change this
Is with love and prayer

Although laws we definitely need
To help keep control everywhere
The only way to change this
Is with love and prayer

Our world is going mad
You’re not safe anywhere
The only way to change this
Is with love and prayer

Yes take action and fight
For what is right if you dare
The only way to change this
Is with love and prayer

The root of the problem
Is people, we must be aware
The only way to change this
Is with love and prayer

We can help our children’s future
Teach them young empathy & care
WE CAN HELP CHANGE THIS
But it will take love and prayer

I don’t like to get into political issues and right now gun laws is a very hot topic. Everyone has their own opinions and views and my relationship with you and my loved ones is more important than whether we agree on politics or not. But these incidents did get me thinking about the real root of the problem…people! People are messed up. Laws help…absolutely! You know I am fighting for animals all of the time. So still fight for laws, but we have to look at and know the root, the real root of the problem; people and the confused society we live in. Just like with making a difference with how animals are treated, I feel a change can be made with this shooting/gun problem by helping people, starting with our little ones, the future.
