A Thunderstorm is Brewing

under-covers

Thunder, lightning, rain…oh my!

It’s coming our way and I anticipate my cat will be hiding under a blanket as she usually does.

I read a few tips about how to help your pet during a storm. One of them is exactly what my cat does…allow them to hide. Make a few safe spots for them in the house. I provide a blanket for her to hide under in the living room so she stays near me. But she can also go in her bed, under the bed, under the sheets (as pictured in photo) wherever she needs to. Bringing Home a New Cat or Kitten

Kathy4

Mollie

You’re so excited to bring home a new kitten or cat. Your child has been asking for one forever and you finally decide to go for it. Before you do, take the time to be prepared. Being prepared will make it easier on you and your new furry friend.

Peteducation.com has a great article that can walk you through some steps to be prepared. Here is one quote from the article:

“You will be taking your cat out of a familiar environment, putting him into a noisy, moving vehicle, then expecting him to adjust to new surroundings, new people and perhaps, new animals. This is a lot to ask, and no matter how wonderful you and your home are, even the most easy-going cat is likely to be stressed and nervous.”

STORY TAKEN FROM “CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE PET LOVER’S SOUL”

“Twenty-one years ago, my husband gave me Sam, an eight-week-old schnauzer, to help ease the loss of our daughter, who was stillborn. Sam and I developed a very special bond over the next fourteen years. It seemed nothing that happened could ever change that.
At one point, my husband and I decided to relocate from our New York apartment to a new home in New Jersey. After we were there awhile, our neighbor, whose cat had recently had kittens, asked us if we would like one. Continue reading

Red Rovers Reading Program

I did this training online earlier this year. This is an awesome thing. Its teaching children empathy for animals! If you’re an educator you know this also teaches empathy to humans. Studies have shown connections.
If have teacher friends, share this with them. The more schools this program is in, the more the world will start treating animals with the respect and care God intended for them. The more we will be a part of making a change in the world.

Adopt From a Shelter

It always breaks my heart when someone tells me they just got a new puppy or kitten and when I ask “where did you get it?”, their answer is they drove miles to go get it from a breeder. Ahhhh! Why would someone make that choice when there are so many animals sitting in shelters who will most likely be euthanized if no-one adopts them in a certain time period.

Here are some links to some articles discussing this topic:
Why Adopt Rather Than Buy?
Breeders vs. Rescues
Buying vs. Adopting

The number of animals euthanized in a day is absolutely mind boggling. As human beings, we are responsible to care for these creatures. How can we support places out only for a profit and ignore
innocent animals waiting for a home?

Merry Christmas

I haven’t posted anything for a while, the holidays have kept me busy as I am sure they have kept you as well. I was looking through a book I have called “Chicken Soup for the Soul at Christmas.” This little story made me cry.

“Merry Christmas, My Friend”

“I will never forget you,” the old man said. A tear rolled down his leathery cheek. “I’m getting too old, I can’t take care of you anymore.”
With his head tilted to one side, Monsieur DuPree watched his master. “Woof, woof! Woof, woof!” He wagged his tail back and forth, wondering, What’s he talking about?
“I can’t take care of myself anymore, let alone take care of you.” The old man cleared his throat. He pulled a hankie from his pocket and blew his nose with a mighty blast.
“Soon, I’ll move to an old-age home, and, I’m sorry to say, you can’t come along. They don’t allow dogs there, you know.” Bent over from age, the old man limped over to Monsieur DuPree and stroked the dog’s head.
