Stay Strong

My heart literally breaks for animals and how they are treated in our society by so many. And my new favorite word for anyone that I hear or read about that hurts an animal is jack***. You see, I’m not one who curses, but that seems to be a favorite word of mine lately.

Is it because I’m older and less patient? Is it because my sister passed away and I’m more sensitive? Or maybe it’s both. Whatever the reason I wrote the following short poem to express some of the emotions I have been feeling (swear words not included 🙂 ).

Empathy For All, Except…

Does empathy for all include insects? Is it because a bug is so small in comparison to us and considered pests that our empathy might not extend to them?

This week I stepped in for a teacher to go get some water. I was only outside with the children for a few minutes when I noticed most of the group was over at the bushes. I went over to see what they were doing. This is when I saw a girl ripping the wings off of a beetle. I was shocked! This was our conversation…

Me: What are you doing, did you just rip his wings off?
Girl: Yes.
Me: Why?
Girl: Because they’re eating our plants and making holes in them.
Me: So you’re ripping their wings off for that?
Girl: Yes, gardeners say to do this.
Me: What? I have never heard of such a thing. What gardeners?
Girl and other students: All gardeners. They’re killing all of our plants, bushes, and trees so they’re killing us.
Me: They are not killing us. We don’t rip the wings off of insects, that’s cruel. That would be like someone ripping your arms off.
Another girl: So, I wouldn’t care.

Group of kids went to picnic table and were all talking about it, I went over to listen and then intervened. Continue reading →

Seriously Sad

Someone I know shared a very sad thing with me that happened to her son. I couldn’t believe it!

Her son, Elliott, who is in college was sharing a house with another guy. They got a dog together and Elliott became particularly fond of this dog. He became very close to him and as most people who care about their pets do, Elliott soon saw this dog as family. He played with him, bragged about him, and took pictures of him all the time.

Fast forward to eight years later, when one morning Elliott couldn’t find his dog anywhere. He was looking all over the house & yard. All he found was his collar on the kitchen table. He asked his roommate numerous times where the dog was but the roommate wouldn’t say anything. Becoming more alarmed, Elliott became frantic and started raising his voice and demanding to know what happened to him. His roommate finally admitted he had taken the dog to the vet in the middle of the night to be euthanized.

This was a healthy, happy, eight year old dog. His life was just ended and why? Because the neighbors complained he killed some of their chickens.

A New Life For Jack

Six years ago Jack was found by a little boy. The little boy heard barking come from a dumpster in the parking lot of his apartment building. He took this little dog out of the dumpster and brought him to school where a teacher helped find him a new home. That new home was with someone I know. Continue reading →

For Sale

I have a hard time when I see things like horse auctions, animals for sale at a flea market, and puppy mills where the focus is on making money. It may be the way the world is, but that doesn’t mean it’s right. There is a lot wrong with this world, I’m sure you agree with that.

We sell animals, living beings. I sit back and I think what would the creator of all the animals think of this? If I asked him “is this what you intended?” I think he would say “no.” If I asked him “does dominion over animals mean we can do whatever we please with them?”, I think he would say “no.” If I asked him “do you see animals as property?”, I think he would say “no.” Continue reading →

A Dog Forced In An Overhead Bin

Being an animal advocate I can’t pass by the hot topic right now concerning a precious dog who lost his life on an airplane.  This little 10 month old puppy’s life was lost tragically. A flight attendant forced passengers to put their dog in the over head bin. If you haven’t heard about this, the video below will explain.
